The step after conservatory is usually a program, not a contract. Young artist programs give singers coaching, stage time and contacts before they enter the profession. This comparison covers the programs below, with each detail taken from the program’s own page and its seen date given at the foot of this page. For more preparation advice, see the roles section.

The 2027 application cycle

The 2027 season for singers runs from Monday, 7 June through Saturday, 14 August 20271. The application deadline was 31 July 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time, and that date has passed1. In-person auditions were held in Atlanta on 22 September 2026 and in New York on 24 to 27 September 20261. The application and audition fee was none1.

Singers submitted two video files of contrasting operatic arias recorded in the last 12 months1. The required materials were a completed form, the videos, a headshot, a resume and contact information for two industry professionals as professional references1. Singers selected for an in-person audition were notified after the video prescreening round, about three weeks before their audition date1. Incomplete or late applications were not considered1.

Separately, Adler Fellows are engaged for roles in San Francisco Opera’s season1.

Santa Fe Opera

The Santa Fe Opera’s Apprentice Program for Singers is internationally recognized as one of the finest programs of its kind2. It offers unmatched opportunities for professional experience and international exposure2. Graduates of the Apprentice Programs for Singers and Technicians are active with opera, theater and ballet companies around the world2.

Houston Grand Opera: YAVA

HGO’s Young Artist Vocal Academy was established in 2011 for singers at the undergraduate level3. It takes the most talented young singers for one week of training3. Singers leave the week with an understanding of their strengths and how to improve their skills3.

Chautauqua Opera

The Chautauqua Opera Young Artist Program attracts 700 to 900 applicants each year, of whom approximately 400 are invited to auditions in the fall4. From those auditions, 16 Young Artists are chosen to participate in the summer season4. All Young Artists receive extensive musical coaching from a nationally recognized coaching staff4.

Glimmerglass Festival

The Resident Artists Program was established at Glimmerglass in 19885. It provides training and performance experience for talented artists at the beginning of their professional careers5. The program accepts opera singers, musical theater singers and dancers, coaches and accompanists, conductors and stage directors5. Most members hold bachelor’s and master’s degrees from leading conservatories5. Residents spend three months at the festival5.

Jette Parker Artists Programme

The Jette Parker Artists Programme is a professional residency for artists of exceptional talent6. Each artist is contracted for two years6. Auditions by application have been held annually, with contracts starting in August6. Auditions for the singers are held every season6. The programme was launched in September 20016.

How to choose

Match the program to your stage. A singer still in an undergraduate degree can use YAVA to learn their strengths and leave with contacts at HGO3. A singer with a bachelor’s or master’s degree fits the Glimmerglass profile5. A young professional who wants a two-year contracted residency should read the Jette Parker page first6.

Merola, for one, prescreens video files before it invites anyone to an in-person audition1. Build a package that suits your voice with the audition package guide, and check where your voice sits with the Fach system. Once you are accepted, how to learn a role covers the preparation you will need in the program.
